In recent years, Bangkok has undeniably become a prime destination for the art community, driven by the expanding art and cultural sectors supported by both public and private initiatives. This development has been bolstered by the emergence of new art spaces, ranging from commercial private galleries to well-supported international art fairs and festivals. These efforts have positioned Bangkok as one of the key art hubs in Southeast Asia.

Despite the growing diversity within Thailand’s art scene, one notable shortfall has been the lack of art fairs managed by international organisations. Such platforms are essential in today’s interconnected world, where linking local artists and galleries to regional and global networks is a crucial goal for many nations.

ACCESS BANGKOK, an art fair debuting in late 2024, aims to address this gap in Thailand’s contemporary art landscape. Initiated by two South Korean organisations—ARTMEETSLIFE, an art fair expert, and ARTUE, a digital platform for art gallery—the event brings together partner galleries from South Korea and other parts of Southeast Asia. It is also backed by South Korea’s government cultural fund.

The event features 30 participating galleries, including 12 from South Korea, such as Johyun Gallery and Gallery2, which have showcased at Art Basel and Frieze. Other notable Korean spaces include ThisWeekendRoom, A Lounge Contemporary, and Baik Art, alongside experimental venues like CDA, Objecthood, and FFF, all contributing to the global visibility of emerging Korean artists.

On the Thai side, nine major galleries will participate, including Nova Contemporary, SAC Gallery, Gallery VER, Bangkok CityCity Gallery, and Tang Contemporary. These galleries have played pivotal roles in shaping Thailand’s art ecosystem over the past few years.

Additionally, nine galleries from other Asian and Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan, will join. Noteworthy participants include A+WORKS of ART from Malaysia, The Drawing Room from the Philippines, and Richard Koh Projects from Singapore.

The diversity of artists and artworks selected for ACCESS BANGKOK underscores a commitment to fostering an international art context. While supported by organisations outside the region, the close collaboration with galleries strengthens the art market infrastructure and elevates artists’ profiles while enriching the broader art trading landscape.

Beyond gallery exhibitions, ACCESS BANGKOK emphasises public engagement through special events across Bangkok. Highlights include public discussions by Korean artists and designers Teo Yang and Bo Young Song, CEO of ARTUE, on 6 December at Bangkok Kunsthalle, exploring the intersection of art, design, and innovation. Another notable event is a lecture by celebrated writer Hyunjoon Yoo on 3 December at Chulalongkorn University, organised by the Korean Cultural Center in Thailand.

After the fair concludes, the showcased artworks will remain accessible via ARTUE’s digital platform, allowing collectors worldwide to view and purchase pieces through an online viewing room, extending the fair’s impact beyond its physical venue.

ACCESS BANGKOK will be open to the public free of charge from 5–7 December 2024 at Pinnacle Hall, ICONSIAM. Daily tours in English, conducted by art specialists from South Korea, will provide insights into the highlights and exhibitions, offering visitors a deeper understanding of South Korean contemporary art. This dynamic event, with its diverse array of galleries and activities, promises to enliven Thailand’s contemporary art scene. It serves as a valuable platform for Thai artists and galleries to develop, learn, and connect with the global art community.
